The Norwegian nature is distinct with its rocky terrain with fertile valleys and a long costal line which is filled with fjords. The mountain ridge in the east borders towards Sweden.

Coastal Areas

The coast of Norway is about 20.000km long which makes it about 10% longer then the coast of USA. The coastline is broken up by the many fjords and islands. The number of islands along the coast is about 50.000.

Fjords

Norway is known for its many fjords. The fjords were created during the ice age by the glacier cutting a U-shaped valley in the surrounding bedrock. The Hardangerfjord is about 800 meters deep in its middle since fjords tends to be very deep. Norway has also a large amount of waterfalls.

Forests and Woods

About 37% of Norway is covered with forest and about half of it is counted as productive forest. There are three kinds of forests in Norway, pine forest, deciduous forest and in the northern parts the forest is containing arctic downy birch.

Mountains

The mountain chain Skanderna lies in the east and makes a natural border between Norway and Sweden. The highest point in Norway is Galdhöpiggen and with its 2469 meters it is the highest mountain in Northern Europe.
